BACKGROUND:

As the wiki covers the novel events and not the show events I'm going to summarize the show events here instead since they differ.

Born to Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli, Jin Ling was heralded as the merging of two cultivation sects and was well loved. His Uncles Jiang Cheng and Jin Guanyao were the leaders of their sects, respectively, and though his other uncle - Wei Wuxian - was vilified at the time, he was well known as a powerful cultivator called the Yiling Patriarch.

Just before his first month celebration, his father Jin Zixuan was killed by the Ghost General Wen Ning under the supposed command of Wei Wuxian (though it is later revealed to have been someone sabotaging him). This set a series of events into place that culminated with the death of his mother, Jiang Yanli, during the battle of Nightless City with Wei Wuxian. Again, later it is revealed this wasn't Wuxian's fault either, but regardless, Jin Ling has grown up knowing one thing: Wei Wuxian killed both of his parents, and destroyed his life.

16 years pass and Jin Ling is raised by his uncles, though he stays primarily in the Jin Clan, he's shown to be very close with Jiang Cheng and likely split a lot of his time between Yunmeng and Lanling, bouncing between both the cities of his families.

He was raised from birth to be a cultivator, like his father, mother and uncles before him, and was trained in the sword and in golden core cultivation.

During his 16th year, Wei Wuxian returned to the waking world. First running into him as "Mo Xuanyu" (also technically one of his uncles - look, his grandfather was a ho) on Dafan mountain, their paths continue to intersect throughout the story. Jin Ling does not have many friends and tends to run around getting himself into trouble in order to prove himself, and this is why he turns up both in the Nie Ancestral grave having been lured into a wall when he destroyed part of it. Rescued by Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, he feels he owes "Mo Xuanyu" a favour, so when Jiang Cheng captures Wei Wuxian, he lies to his uncle in order to rescue him in return. Having watched Jiang Cheng used his spiritual whip on Mo Xuanyu, he believes that Xuanyu cannot possibly be Wei Wuxian, despite his Uncle's protests, and thus though he knows Jiang Cheng's suspicions, lets Wei Wuxian go anyway.

They meet again later in Yi City ("Coffin Town"), where Jin Ling and many other Juniors have been led. They run into Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji again, where many of them are poisoned. A man name Xue Yang is there being super evil and the juniors all have an adventure where they ~bond~ and everyone thinks Mo Xuanyu is super cool compared to when everyone thought he was crazy. Xue Yang is killed, the mystery of his relationship with Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan is solved, and everyone goes home.

Jin Ling next sees Wei Wuxian in his home city of Lanling, where they have some very cute bonding time before Jin Ling's aunt kills herself, Wei Wuxian is revealed to be who he is and tries to flee Lanling with Lan Wangji. Confused and hurt and vengeful, Jin Ling stabs Wei Wuxian on the way out. This is his pull point.

PERSONALITY:

EMOTIONAL INSTABILITY: Jin Ling is an orphan who has been completely spoiled on one end and completely lacking of the nurturing he should be getting on the other. With one guardian obsessed with power and his own station, and the other obsessed with the murder of his family and the betrayal of his brother, Jin Ling has not had a lot in the way of good emotional role models. He is quick to snap, quicker to take offence, and can easily get overwhelmed by his own emotions. He does not suppress anything - he wears his heart on his sleeve for everyone to see and doesn't particularly care who sees it. This is shown most clearly on the docks heading toward Lotus Pier where he gets so overwhelmed between wanting to hate Wen Ning and trying to compartmentalize his mixed feelings about Wei Wuxian that he simply breaks down in tears and clutches his father's sword when asked to put it down. He has a bad temper and he knows it - most people attribute this to him being 'motherless' which of course only makes his temper worse.

SUPERIORITY MASKING AN INFERIORITY COMPLEX : Jin Ling has an inferiority complex a mile wide that looks like a superiority complex from the outside. Forever feeling like he's incomplete or lacking something intrinsic to everyone else, he devotes all his time into trying to be better than all of them. If he can prove he's better than them without having had the things they did, then no one can speak behind his back anymore. Thus, around others he has a tendency to bluff and talk himself up - often quite literally sticking his nose in the air. Sometimes he does this about himself, but more often he uses his connection to his uncles in order to place himself above others. Essentially, he 'pulls rank' where he can.

LOVE AND LOYALTY: He loves fiercely and has a deep loyalty streak, defending his parents' honour at any opportunity, because to him they are idols more than they are people. Because he has so few friends, his love is centred almost entirely around his family, most notably his two uncles. He has utter faith in them, their capabilities, and their word, even if sometimes he will end up defying them...

REBELLIOUS, STRONG WILLED AND RIGHTEOUS: He's rebellious despite his loyalty, because he hates sitting still and he hates being told what to do, so he will get his nose into absolutely everything mostly because he can. He's used to being alone and bullied, and will swear up and down that he doesn't need anyone else, when really he longs deeply for friendship and the connection to others that without parents or siblings he never had. Once he decides he wants to do something, he's going to do it regardless of what anyone thinks about it - even when these people are his uncles. If he thinks something is right, then it's right. End of. If he thinks something is wrong, ditto. Other people's moral codes have far less say than his own, even when his own can be... well. Questionable. Attacking innocent men on the street for daring to say the name "Wei Wuxian" within 50 yards of him when the man didn't even know he was there is... a bit much.

GULLIBLE: He can be gullible, but once he finds out the truth his deep sense of honour will not let an injustice merely rest.

ROOM TO GROW: He's also a teenager that hasn't fully grown into his own skin yet, and feels like he has to figure it all out by himself when clearly everyone else is getting easy to follow guidebooks from their moms!!

Despite all this, Jin Ling is actually incredibly capable. Because he continuously pushes himself to learn and to grow, and because he's had to adapt to night hunting on his own with only Fairy for company, he can do a lot more on his own than the average Junior Cultivator can. And once he can learn to set aside his grief and desire for vengeance, he may be able to find a calmer sense of self on the emotional spectrum, as well.

Jin Ling is MOTIVATED primarily by a sense of self growth, and of proving everyone else in the world wrong. Regardless of what people say about him, he will show them that he can be better than they ever imagined of him, and he is driven to overcome all of his deficits. He is also highly motivated by a sense of honour and justice, leading him for a long time to want vengeance on Wei Wuxian - but that vengeance isn't blind. When he learns that his uncle had nothing to do with his parents deaths, he manages to admit this and turn to finding the real truth rather than carry on with the 'truth' he has known and fought for all his life. What he has always believed is not as important to him as what the honest truth of the world is. He wants to know what is right and wrong, and he wants to figure it out for himself.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

GOLDEN CORE CULTIVATION

Like all cultivators in his series, Jin Ling comes with a basic set of powers that centre around his 'golden core', which is essentially his spiritual energy. Jin Ling is a junior cultivator, so while he does have access to cultivation magic, it isn't as strong as someone like Lan Wangji, for example.

ENHANCED HEALING / LONGEVITY: Jin Ling heals at about four times the speed that a typical human would heal, and could potentially live several hundred years. Can withstand more pain than the average person.

ENHANCED STRENGTH / AGILITY: Not talking Superman here, but stronger than the average person, and can jump long distances (think Wuxia style).

SWORD ABILITIES / MAGIC: Jin Ling can do more with a sword than just sword fight. It can send shockwaves out when he slashes with it in order to hit objects over a dozen feet away (not quite enough force to knock someone over), and he can throw it up to 60 feet, hit something, and have it return to his hand. If he stands on his sword he can fly on it for long distances.

ARCHERY ABILITIES / MAGIC: Jin Ling is incredibly adept at the bow, and can fire three arrows at once. All the weird fancy magic with swords applies here too.

TALISMANS: Though Jin Ling doesn't use these often, he can. A talisman is basically a minor spell that can do things like lure spirits, set something on fire, or send messages.

MAGIC DOG FAIRY

Fairy can sense demons, ghosts and spirits, and is smarter than the average bear.

QUIANKUN POUCH

A little purse-like pouch that basically works like a bag of holding. It can hold up to 5 cubic feet. Objects shrink when he goes to place them inside. Nothing living can be put in the bag.

SPIRIT POUCH

Similar to a quiankun pouch, but specifically for trapping a spirit within it.
